EQUAL DUST SELECTED FOR NORDISK PANORAMA COMPETITION
Making Movies’ short film Equal Dust (Elämä ja yö), written and directed by Jani Peltonen, has been selected for the Short Film Competition at Nordisk Panorama, one of the leading festivals for Nordic short and documentary films.
Taking place in Malmö, Sweden, from 17–22 September, Nordisk Panorama brings together the year’s standout Nordic films. EQUAL DUST is one of four Finnish productions competing for the €5,000 Best Nordic Short Film Award.
The selection continues an exceptional international festival run for Equal Dust. Since its international premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival, the film has screened at festivals including Uppsala Short Film Festival, DOK Leipzig, Nordic Film Days Lübeck, Porto/Post/Doc, BAFICI in Buenos Aires, Palm Springs International ShortFest and São Paulo International Short Film Festival, among others.
Along the way, the film has received several awards and distinctions, including the Best Short Documentary Award at DocPoint Helsinki, the Best Short Film Award at Seeyousound in Turin and a Special Mention at 2ANNAS Riga International Short Film Festival.
Set in Helsinki in November 1983, Equal Dust brings together NATO’s Able Archer nuclear exercise, a 12-minute uninterrupted tracking shot through the city at night and Finnish Eurovision Song Contest entries from the 1980s. Using archival material to revisit a moment when Cold War tensions brought the world close to nuclear confrontation, the film constructs an alternative perspective on the imagined destruction of Finland.
Equal Dust is written and directed by Jani Peltonen, edited by Matti Näränen and features sound design by Antti Onkila. The film is produced by Kaarle Aho and Pauliina Maus for Making Movies.
